Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut was not exactly a smash success at the Cannes Film Festival. “Lost River” was harshly reviewed although some writers conceded that there were moments of magic. Just not enough. It’s the story of a struggling single mother (played by Christina Hendricks) in battered Detroit who gets caught up in a nightmarish world of deviation. As a whole, the movie was not well received by the audience either – they booed at the end. Eva Mendes, who costarred in the film, was conspicuously absent from Cannes so she couldn’t console herboyfriend. This couple refuses to walk a red carpet together -if indeed they still ARE together.
