Shah Rukh Khan is a charming personality. The superstar charmed the TED Talks Conference crowd on Thursday evening when he became the first Indian to speak at the prestigious event. At the conference, SRK talked about his superstar life in India, traced the movements in his life and more.

Although the full version of his conference will be aired on Indian television, some of the quotes from Shah Rukh Khan’s speech were impactful. In a charming and self-aware talk, he said, “I sell dreams and I peddle love to millions of people back home in India who assume that I am the best lover in the world.”

“I’ve been made to understand there are lots of you here who have never seen my work, and I feel really sad for you. That doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m completely self-obsessed, as a movie star should be.” SRK words received an uproarious laughter from the huge audience which had gathered to witness SRK’s talk in Vancouver.

Shah Rukh Khan said, “Humanity is a lot like me. It’s an ageing movie star, grappling with all the newness around it, wondering whether it got it right in the first place and still trying to find a way to keep on shining regardless.”

In one of his most heartfelt speech, Shah Rukh Khan talked about his birth at a refugee camp in Delhi to the night when his father passed away when he was only 14 years old. “From that night onwards, much akin to humanity in its adolescence, I learned the crude tools of survival,” he says.

SRK further added, “The framework of life was simple then. You ate what you could find, and you did what you were told to do. You married the first girl you dated and you were a techie if you could fix the carburetor in your car. You went wherever life took you for work and people were mostly welcoming of you … Most important, you were who you were, and you said what you thought.”

Then, the conversation shifted to his late 20s, when he finally decided to shift his base from Delhi to the dream city of Mumbai. The city gave him so much where he met so many people from all over the world and experienced miracle of innovation and creativity. Talking about superstardom, he said, “By the time I was 40, I was really flying. I had done 50 films by then, and 200 songs and I’d been knighted by the Malaysians and given the highest civil honour by the French government.  Humanity was soaring with me. We were both flying off the handle, actually.”

Shah Rukh Khan then recalled the time when Internet took over and the things started to change. “Everything I said took a new meaning; everything I did — good, bad, ugly — was there for the world to comment upon and judge. Everything I didn’t say or do was also met with the same fate,” he added.

SRK added, “I started to feel that I couldn’t be who I wanted to be or say what I actually thought. And humanity at this time completely identified with me. Both of us were going through our midlife crisis. Humanity, like me, was becoming an over-exposed prima donna. The whole world and all of the humanity seemed as lost as I was.”

SRK, 51, talked about the world still has humanity and the things he has learned over the years. “The present you is brave. The present you is hopeful. The present you is innovative and resourceful. And, of course, the present you is annoyingly indefinable,” he said. He continued saying, “The dignity of a life, a human being, a culture, a religion, a country actually resides in its ability for grace and compassion. I’ve learned that whatever moves you, whatever urges you to create, build, whatever keeps you from failing, whatever helps you survive, is perhaps the oldest and the simplest emotion is known to mankind, and that is love.”

Shah Rukh Khan talked about not building walls and welcoming people to break barriers. “You may use your power to build walls and keep people outside. Or you may use it to break barriers and welcome them in. You may use your faith to make people afraid and terrify them into submission. Or you can use it to give courage to people, so they rise to the greatest heights of enlightenment,” he said.

What’s a show without Shah Rukh Khan’s dance? The actor also made some of the officials dance on his famous ‘Lungi Dance’ whilst the audience cheered for him.

In the end, Shah Rukh Khan said, ““It has to be you who creates the world that is its own best lover, that should be the future you. I am an ageing movie star, who has been made to believe that there is a possibility of a world which is complete, wholly, self-obsessively in love with itself.”
