Sonam Kapoor at 'We The Women' session at Mehboob Studio

When someone mentions Sonam Kapoor, the first one that comes to people’s minds is that she is a fashionista. However, one can’t deny that she is a fine performer as well, having worked in films like Raanjhanaa and the more recent Neerja, for which she even got a National Award. Moreover, she takes a stand on a lot of issues for which she has earned respect from all quarters.

In the past, Sonam Kapoor has reacted to the pay disparity that exists in Bollywood. And she once again brought the topic up at ‘We The Women’ session held during the weekend in Mumbai. She began by saying that she got secondary treatment on a film while the others (probably the leading actor) didn’t. That experience ensured that she won’t act with those who discriminate her on the basis of gender. Hence, she waited for more than a year before she signed Raanjahnaa since Aanand L Rai was adamant in taking her. She also said, “I was paid the same amount as (lead actor) Dhanush. And that’s very rare.”

She further added, “I make my choices as I have the privilege to make my choices. I can afford that courage of doing a film like Neerja or Khoobsurat. I know what my box office numbers are and the openings my films get. I know that since Raanjhanaa, I have not had one box office failure. I know what I deserve.”

She then emphasized that actresses should not settle for a lesser pay cheque and should be united to take a stand over this issue, instead of pulling each other down. Sonam Kapoor stated, “There’s too much competition. So If I take a stand and say that I am not going to do a film for a small pay, there will be another woman who will say, ‘It’s okay, I’ll do it for this much.’ The point is, we need to stick together. That won’t happen if you’re constantly pulling each other down.”

On the film front, Sonam Kapoor is busy shooting for her home production Veere Di Wedding, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania and Sumeet Vyas.
