Bombay Velvet

Over 4 million views and counting. The promo of Bombay Velvet continues to find audience for itself as Anurag Kashyap's dream project gets ready to be unveiled in May. While this mega film has been designed as a period magnum opus no less, insiders claim that at the core of it, the Ranbir Kapoor-Anushka Sharma-Karan Johar starrer is a thrilling dramatic entertainer.

Even as reactions continue to pour in, all eyes are on the film to deliver really well and bring back the moolah in the industry, especially when Bollywood has seen only Baby come anywhere close to the 100 crore mark this year. With that number being a bare minimum expectation and a lot more expected to validate the hype surrounding the period film set in the 60s, industry is positive that Ranbir Kapoor's stardom would do the trick to (certainly) bring in the initial footfalls with the content (on its merit) deciding further long run for Bombay Velvet.

"Ranbir is a huge star and people have a lot of expectations from him. Whatever film that he comes out with, people not only notice but also stand up and run to the theatres," says distributor and film business analyst Girish Johar, "See any films of his. Whether it is a special appearance in Roy or even Besharam, both films got huge starts, which is a testimony of sheer star power. Bombay Velvet should be no different."

Meanwhile, the trade is keeping its fingers crossed. Says Akshaye Rathi, film exhibitor and distributor, "Considering the mega high budget of the film and the other resources that have been deployed to make this film, I'm sure everyone is hoping that the film works and at least breaks even, for the sake of the fraternity and stakeholders!"

There is an element of positive thought process that is keeping the interest alive high for the mega affair. "I feel that with Ranbir Kapoor in a new avtar, the film has potential and also other factors like Anushka, Karan Johar and the power of Phantom too," says distributor Rajesh Thadani, "However all these factors will help in getting an initial, but ultimately content will matter."

There is unanimity in acknowledging Ranbir's stardom that would help Bombay Velvet bring in the kind of moolah in the opening weekend itself, which would pave the way for future earnings.

Says Harsh Jain, film distributor and exhibitor, Sanman Group, "I am sure about Ranbir's stardom while the period of release is good too. The film will open to good numbers on Friday, though what will happen the next day depends totally on the merit of the film." Prashant Solanki is positive, "Bombay Velvet will do good. I liked the trailer and Ranbir has good fan following. There's good action, music, romance and thrill. Lastly, typically May, June, July, August, November and December are favorable months for Box Office. Films do good business in these months. After a dull 2014 and first quarter of 2015, hope we see momentum shifting to Bollywood and have a good year ahead."

Akshaye goes on round it up, "The presence of A-league stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma should help, at least with a good opening. However, the last few years have proven that irrespective of the presence or absence of stars, it's ultimately the content that has to be engaging and entertaining, to help the film go past the finish line! Let's hope Mr. (Anurag) Kashyap can deliver on that front!"

We hope so as well.
