I read a lot about one night stands and extra marital relationships - Nyra Banerjee on One Night Stand

Sunny Leone may be playing the central protagonist in One Night Stand. However, there is another woman that she has to content with in the Jasmine D'Souza directed film. Though her part in the film has been kept under the wraps, Nyra Banerjee has a solid role to enact in the film which has Tanuj Virwani as the male protagonist. While his character goes on to have a 'one night stand' with Sunny in the film, back home he has a modern, educated and urban wife in Nyra. We get chatting with Nyra who talks about what led her into the film and how she brings in further weight to the proceedings in this dramatic tale.

How did you step into One Night Stand?
I had auditioned for the role and the next thing I knew, Jasmine really liked my performance and simplicity. There is an innocent image of mine which was needed for the film and Jasmine approved. I am excited about One Night Stand because it is in true terms, a different film. Indian cinema is evolving and trying out different kind of themes. I wanted to try something like this. That said, when the role actually came to me, I wanted to talk to my parents about it. (Laughs) I thought they may kick me out of the house for this film. See, I come from a middle class family and One Night Stand carries a very bold theme.

So what really happened back home?
When I reached home and spoke to my parents, they had this very nonchalant expression towards this whole concept of the film. Gradually it settled down though. Since my mom is a writer and a novelist, she thought that for us as artists it is important for us to exhibit our artistic side. She dealt with it maturely and told my dad that it was okay if I did this film. She realized that the film is trying to say something to the audience and create awareness. My mother truly felt that this role would help me showcase a spectrum of emotions and actually it was cool to embrace such a theme.

No wonder, in the film you are not being seen as someone who can be pushed to the wall, right?
Absolutely. As for my real self too, I am not a bechari kind of a person. I give my 100% to things when I am determined. Even if such thing had happened in my life (where my loved one goes for a one night stand), then I would deliberate on whether my love wasn't enough or may be that guy wasn't deserving of me. I associated this role with my own nature. I did a lot of homework and researched through Google. I read a lot about one night stands and extra marital relationships. I evoked my real emotions and once I got my imagination into play, it all just came out well.

It would have been interesting to play a modern and no-nonsense young woman of today.
Yes. When it comes to my presentation, we worked quite closely on the kind of costumes I wear in the film. I don't think I have gone ultra-glamorous for the role. However, I am being presented as this decent sophisticated lady. She knows her life, is independent, realizes her worth and is traditional at heart.

And how about your relationship with Tanuj Virwani, who plays your husband in the film?
On screen, Tanuj and I are more of partners than husband and wife. I had envisaged this role as his wife and confidante. There is romance but yet there is an overall friendly behaviour where we are being more of 'mastikhor' It has everything in a manner when you have your husband as a boyfriend. Me and Tanuj had worked our chemistry accordingly. You would see more than just intimacy.

Considering the fact that this is also Tanuj's third film, how has he been as a co-star?
Tanuj is quite an energetic personality. As actors, it was quite important for us to understand each other. I believe it is important for a couple to work together. It is not about how I perform and how he performs. We had to exchange our thoughts and emotions on how we go ahead on a scene. We had our workshops and discussed things with our director Jasmine D'Souza. See, as a woman I may see things differently while as a man he may see them in his own way. Eventually we had to go ahead with the director's vision so that there is no conflict of interest.

So what happens next?
I am preparing for another film for which I start shooting in May. That film is a complete departure from One Night Stand. I am super charged about that as well.
