2016 has seen four clean successes from Bollywood so far – Airlift, Neerja, Kapoor & Sons and Ki & Ka. While Akshay Kumar's Airlift stays on to be the biggest so far and belonged to drama genre, Sonam Kapoor's Neerja was a thriller. Ensemble affair Kapoor & Sons was a family drama while Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor's Ki & Ka was a romantic drama. None of these has been a quintessential action affair though. For that segment of audience that has been waiting for such genre on screen, there hasn't been much to latch on to.
There seems to be good news though with Baaghi, which is being brought on screen as an action affair.
"Producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Sabbir Khan have shown things as they are right from the promo stage itself. Baaghi isn't meant to be a soppy, weepy, melodramatic romantic affair. It has music but not the kind that you associate with the likes of Aashiqui. Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor have a young audience to cater to and are popular in this segment. However, they are doing a lot more than just running around the trees. They are happy kicking butt, and they are doing so in style. It is this very core of Baaghi that makes it stand out amongst the rest of young entertainers that are in the offering," says an insider.
Though there have been a couple of action films that Bollywood has churned out this year, Ghayal Once Again and Rocky Handsome, both turned out to be rather serious affairs. Also, the connect with the youth went missing. However, with Tiger and Shraddha in there, Baaghi is being pitched as 'Bollywood's First Young Action Film of 2016'.
"It makes sense to pitch it that way as that establishes a class of its own," a senior industry person adds, "Somehow this genre of films, where youngsters are seen in the middle of some cool body-to-body action, has gone entirely missing. It is tough to remember which was the last film where something like that was seen. When you have a hero and a heroine on the field battling it out with the villain, and there is good music, humor and masala thrown in as well (and by 'masala' I don't mean the South style 'masala' that had a rather small shelf life in Bollywood), the impact is something altogether different."
It is this very impact that Sajid and Sabbir wanted to create in Baaghi, which resulted in the import of Sudheer Babu from Telugu cinema. As a baddie who isn't afraid of getting his own hands dirty when it comes to slugging it out in order to get the love of his life, there is some cool action designed around his character as well which is said to be the highlight of the film.
Guess that should add on to all the fun!
