The politician called out people who had made surrogacy more of a trend than a necessity.

Addressing a press conference after the Union Cabinet approved the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2016, Sushma Swaraj said that the Bill comes as India has emerged as a surrogacy hub for couples and incidents reported on unethical practices. Further clarifying about the bill she added that while the Bill prohibits commercial surrogacy and allows ethical surrogacy to needy infertile couples, "It also prohibits Single parents, homosexual couples, and live-in relationships couples to opt for altruistic surrogacy."

Referring to big celebrities and indirectly taunting Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, Sushma Swaraj added, "Big celebrities who not only have one but two children, a son and a daughter, even then they went ahead with surrogacy."

Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri Khan had their youngest son Abram Khan in 2013 whereas Aamir Khan and wife Kiran Rao had their son Azad Rao Khan in 2011.
