Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s love epic Mirzya has been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a ‘UA’ certificate. That means children accompanied by adults can watch the film. But with two highly absurd cuts. A shot showing a child holding a gun was asked to be deleted. Says a source in the know about the development, “A 12-year old boy is shown brandishing a loaded gun. The scene is not there to shock. It comes at a crucial juncture in the plot and is an integral part of the film’s dramatic core. But censor guidelines do not permit minors to handle arms and ammunition.” Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who is part of the Shyam Benegal Committee set up to bring reforms in censorship, took the cut without protest. “I believe the censor board needs to undergo several changes in its guidelines. But until those changes are implemented, the guidelines have to be followed,” says Mehra. The other cut demanded by the censor board is a little hard to understand. A bottle of liquor was asked to be blurred. Apparently, it isn’t only the consumption of alcohol that is harmful. Even looking at the beverage can be detrimental to the nation’s health.
