Rahul Kapoor (Fawad Khan)

Rahul, early thirties, is a young novelist, very successful and quickly on his way up; his first novel has been a bestseller. He seems to have his life together quite well, living in London, doing well, clearly a man capable of wearing many hats; he aims to finish his second book and start an architectural project in India. He is fit, always well dressed and very disciplined in his life. We never see him overtaken by his emotions. There is nothing unpredictable about Rahul. He is the favourite of his family, the 'perfect' son. Extremely pragmatic in the way he handles family feuds, and equally thoughtful and affectionate. When he arrives at his house in India, he is shocked to see his parents' marriage falling apart and wants to try to make things alright between them. Simultaneously, he also strives to help his brother with the publishing of his novel and to revive their relationship.

Arjun Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra)

Arjun is an aspiring novelist, in his late twenties. His life hasn't really gone as he has planned so far. He is struggling to make ends meet. In his attitude, Arjun is way more casual than his brother. He doesn't take life too seriously. He knows that his brother has been 'crowned' perfect by his family and has stopped trying to be perfect for them. Arjun comes across as a careless youngster who lacks focus in life. He clearly isn't the ideal son that his family would have, but he strikes a cord with his friends. He is fun-loving, always up for a good time. He is quite sociable and doesn't mind being the joker around who will make everybody laugh. He also has a fun relationship with his grandfather, always indulging him in silly activities. He also isn't one to be politically correct in a tense situation. Arjun isn't surprised by the quarrels between his parents. In fact, he seems to remember quarrels from before as well. He doesn't trust his brother too much, but we see him confide in his mother in tough times. She is his one true friend in the family.

Tia (Alia Bhatt)

Tia is a young, beautiful girl. A fun loving person, she is always up for a good time with her friends. Like any other girl her age, her friends' opinions influence her decisions, especially when it comes to love. She is very confident, outgoing and carefree in her persona. She is also quite street smart and always up for a challenge.

Grandfather (Rishi Kapoor)

The Grandfather is 90 years old and is aware that his end is near. Even after having lived life for almost a century, this man is far from being drab. He is full of wit and humour, always trying to seize each moment because it very well may be his last. Though he often seems senile in his death practices and abusive tone with the nurse, we realise that he is the only member of the family who is living life to the fullest. He plays their childhood games with his grandsons, harmlessly flirts with attractive girls and makes plans to travel to Hawaii. As the story unfolds, this old man who seems disconnected with everything as he is practicing his death, actually comes out looking like the one thing that's keeping the family together. At heart, he still is every bit the young boy who was smitten by the sultry Mandakini in 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili'.

Mom (Ratna Pathak Shah)

The mother has spent her entire life looking after her family. She had once loved her husband dearly, but because of the jolts of life, their relationship is not the same. She seems broken up a little because she hasn't got everything that she was promised by her husband. She is a practical woman and yearns to help out matters financially. While she suspects her husband's infidelity, she is still trying to hold the family together because it is the one thing that is most precious to her. She is a doting mother and though she loves both her sons equally, she is well aware of the differences between them. While she has almost given up on her married life, she has a lot of expectations from her sons and they are her greatest source of happiness. She is willing to give them everything they need to build them a good life. While the father seems quite criticising of Arjun's careless ways, she loves and supports him.

Dad (Rajat Kapoor)

A man in his late fifties, he seems a bit defeated by circumstances in life. Perhaps his biggest failure in life is the fact that he hasn't been able to hold his family together like he would have liked to. He's also not financially well off and is quite tired of his wife nagging about it. He once had a happy marriage and was in love with his wife but has now become quite irritable and moody while dealing with her, or even otherwise. He does however love his family, and is still trying his best to make ends meet and do the best for them. However, he is frustrated to an extent, which may also be a reason for him straying outside the bounds of his marriage.
