Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn

Producer: Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screvwala

Director: Anurag Basu

Cast: Ranbir KapoorPriyanka Chopra and Illena D’ Cruz

Music: Pritam

Rating:

Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra’s Brafi was being awaited hugely due to the characters they both are playing in the film. Both were awarded with the author-backed roles to play in this Anurag Basu’s directed venture. Ranbir essays the role of a charming boy who has the disabilities since he cannot speak and listen. Priyanka is an autistic girl.

The film is a heart-touching love story that takes place with Barfi who first loves Shruti and then Jhilmil. The films of these kinds keep emerging on the Hindi celluloid occasionally but the ones which are made with care and creativity run pretty well among the audiences and at the box office. Barfi is among those few which are made with utter creativity of mind.

The film carries a brilliant script and the execution of the subject is perfectly well on the celluloid. The main character of the film ‘Murphy’ (as he was born with the name)is a charmer. Everyone calls him ‘Barfi’ (Ranbir Kapoor). He is ready all the time with pranks to play. Although with disabilities, Barfi is a full of life guy who snatches everybody’s heart with his sweet actions in Darjeeling.

When Shruti (Illena D’Cruz) visits Darjeeling, this affluent gal soon starts loving Barfi. This is a love between a rich gal with a poor boy. Although she is engaged to a wealthy man in Kolkata, she loses her heart to Barfi. The brief romance soon ends and Shruti leaves Brafi heartbroken to tie the knot with the wealthy guy. Enters into the scene an autistic girl Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), who is from a rich family but the sad thing is that her family is not caring for her at all. Her sensitive needs are not looked after by her family. Amidst all, Barfi lands into problems when he finds that his father is battling with the disease of kidney failure. The poor guy tries very hard to get the money for father’s treatment but in vain. The desperate Barfi then hatches a plan to kidnap Jhilmil to get the required money from her parents. But then they both realize that they are made for each other. Shruti too then begins realizing that she still has romantic feelings for Barfi.

The screenplay is marvelously penned. Anurag Basu deserves the brawny points for this sensitive subject and the writing. His direction is a class in itself also. He binds the viewers from beginning till the end. Cinematography is wonderful and carries weight. Editing is first rate. Music by Pritam Chakraborty is spongy.

Ranbir Kapoor has once again delivered an award-winning performance in this movie. He deserves all the accolodaes for his great acking skills he showed at this platform. After Rockstar, he is again ready to grab the awards. Priyanka Chopra is a classy actress in Bollywood trade. She always impresses the critics and the masses with her dexterous acting expertise and the same she shows in Barfi. South siren Illena D’ Cruz looks gorgeous and delivers good performance. Rest of the cast is fine as well.

Final Verdict by the Critic:

Barfi is a sensitive and heart-touching love story with brilliant performances, powerful script and magnificent direction.
