USA: Oye! Times readers Get FREE $30 to spend on Amazon, Walmart…Bollywood with its plethora of romantic comedies has time and again attracted audience owing to the perfect blend of humour and love. While many struggling actors rose to fame with this genre, let's take a look if BADMASHIYAAN, with its relatively fresh cast, manages to live upto those expectations.
For a fact, BADMASHIYAAN can probably be the reverse of the Yash Raj rom-com LADIES V/S RICKY BAHL. A con girl and her three lovers! Set in Chandigarh, Naari (Suzanna Mukherjee), is a sexy and trendy girl whose sole aim is to make easy money and in process she cons every man who comes her way. Dev (Sidhant Gupta) falls head over heels to the charm of Naari and in the process takes money from the bank to buy a big house for her. Her strange disappearance creates confusion in Dev's life and in order to resolve it, he hires his college friend and detective Pinkesh (Karan Mehra) to find Naari. Meanwhile, Dev gets trapped in a bank robbery and meets the girl-next-door Palak (Gunjan Malhotra) who helps him from tricky situations and then the sparks fly! On the other hand, Pinkesh becomes the next victim of Naari's trap and as he tries to woo her through situations, he gets caught in the hands of a dangerous gangster Jazzy (Sharib Hashmi). Jazzy who is in search of his fiancée Naari, who has conned him off his money, plots a plan to find Naari which in turn brings him face to face with two other victims of Naari (Pinkesh and Dev). Whether Naari manages to successfully escape from the clutches of the men she has conned and does this bring a twist in the 'just brewing' romance in Dev's life is what forms the rest of the story of BADMASHIYAAN.
With con-game as the backdrop, BADMASHIYAAN as a film fails to keep up with the audience's attention beyond a few minutes into the film. Though there are a few laughable moments, as the movie progresses, the jokes start falling apart. The storyline is divided into three parts, mainly the story of three men which ultimately boils down to one climax where all the stories interconnect. While the plotline keeps switching from one part of the story to the other, there are also many underlying yet unnecessary sub plots (the two unwanted 'serendipity' love stories) that adds more to the already existing confusion.
As far as the performances are concerned, the whole film rests on Suzanna's character. Sadly, her performance is over dramatic and fails to impress. Dev as the die hard romantic does a fair job. On the other hand, an experienced television Karan Mehra comes with a bag full of expectations but leaves you disappointed; though compared to others, his sense of humour is worth a mention. Expecting a wonderful performance from Sharib Hashmi is natural considering that he is a National Award winner but somehow his role as Jazzy is weak in comparison to his previous film FILMISTAAN. Gunjan Mehrotra is decent.
The dialogues of the film are laughable. The script written by Kushal Ved Bakshi is flawed, messy and illogical making the film a boring journey. Amit Khanna's direction is way too flimsy and doesn't do any good to save the fate of the film. Many scenes are long, trying to force humour that leaves you fidgety and distracted. Moreover, the costume designer (Abhilasha) does a very grungy job. While the characterization has not been kept into consideration during the designing, most of the costumes are too loud for the character or the occasion, especially that of Gunjan Malhotra.
The music composed by Bobby-Imran is not even hum-worthy. Considering that popular talents like Ankit Tiwari, Mohit Chauhan and Mika Singh have given their voices to the film, we expect a lot from the music department but it fails to register. One of the main reasons for it could be the fact that only one stanza of every song has been featured in the film.
On the whole, BADMASHIYAAN is a shabbily made 'not so funny' entertainer that is worth giving a skip.
