Straight or curly, rough or smooth, your hair needs special attention and every now and then you come across various bizarre things that can happen to your hair if you don’t take care. Now from what we know hair care can be both tricky and risky.

You might end up doing something to your hair out of an undoubted fear and it may result in a complete disaster afterwards. Therefore it is always wise not to follow everything suggested or read about. But sometimes it is hard to separate myth from reality.

Here are some equally bizarre common myths that we have unfolded for you that you should never believe or rely on:

Cutting your hair frequently makes it grow faster. This notion is far from being true. Trimming your hair doesn’t affect growth. It’s only the scalp where the hair grows. The reason why most expert suggest trimming is because hair at the bottom can become rough and entangled and can result in hair breakage.

If you pluck one grey hair, two will grow back in its place. I guess this myth only erupted because people saw more silver strand growth afterwards. The reason is not necessarily plucking. Your hair will become weaker if it’s plucked too much over time, and it’ll eventually stop growing back. Grey hair is an aging factor and it may grow faster for some people.

Color-treated hair is unhealthy. Bleaching is indeed one of the worst things you can do to your hair, but not all types of color treatments should have a bad reputation. Adding in color can actually make your strands look thicker and healthier.

Most people think healthy looking hair is all about external factors like the weather or the products you use. But what you eat affects your hair more than you think. So using only volumized hair products or oil cannot make your hair thick if you do not have a healthy diet. Make sure you’re getting enough carbs, protein, and healthy fats, and pay extra attention to zinc, iron, and vitamin D.

Dandruff usually happens to a dry scalp. We’re used to equating flakes with dryness, so it’s an easy mistake to make, but it’s an oily scalp that usually goes hand in hand with dandruff. Dandruff is a result of yeast infestation in your scalp and is basically due to having oily surfaces.

Oils are a no-go if your hair is greasy. Oils applied to the ends of the hair will add shine and luster. Its only the scalp that has grease and you can avoid applying oil over there. Some oils have the ability to penetrate the hair’s cuticle and actually make it healthier. Coconut oil was shown to protect against bleach, heat, and UV damage; and argon oil was shown to protect against hair lightening-induced protein loss.

You should wash your hair every other day. This is another hoax we all are familiar with. Throw all the hair-washing rules out the window, and actually pay attention to the look and feel of your hair. Everyone’s hair is different. If your hair is oily at the roots, wash it. If not, skip washing until you start feeling greasy. People with dry hair may want to let their scalp become slightly oily to ensure they’re not over-washing it.
