KateAndWilliam-TheRoyalWeddingAll the newspapers are abuzz with the news about the list of those invited to the Royal Wedding. Of course, there are the usual Royals – The Queen herself, surprise! surprise! – and British political figures like David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, but the real interest seems to be focused on the celebrities and foreign notables who may have made the grade. I’m certain that my invite is still in the mail.

We can comb through the various news papers, magazines, and on-line tabloid gossip sites to hunt down a comprehensive who’s who of those watching our two love birds walk down the aisle, but it seems Wikipedia has managed to scoop them all with what appears to be the most complete list of the people coming to toast the bride and groom. As I read down the page, my eye falls on a number of recognisable names like Rowan Atkinson, better known as Mr. Bean, David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, film director Guy Ritchie, and the members of the search and rescue flight C Flight 22 where Prince William is currently serving in the RAF. Foreign leaders outside the Commonwealth are apparenty not invited leaving Obama and Sarkozy to find other things to do that weekend. It also seems that Canada’s Stephen Harper will not be attending as he is going to busy trying to keep his job.

The Telegraph has put together an interesting list called the Royal Wedding by numbers. Of note:

1,700 Number of Rich Tea biscuits used to make wedding cake specially requested by Prince William.

162 million Internet pages mentioning the wedding, according to Google.

26,000 Tulips outside Buckingham Palace to be cut before the wedding day after hot weather made them peak early.

187 Horses will be on parade.

5,000 Number of individual peals of Westminster Abbey’s bells during the service.

35 Sniffer dogs on duty.

79 Percentage of people who say the Monarchy will still be here in 25 years time.

The Telegraph reports on the speculation that Kate Middleton will drop the supposed outdated wedding vow of obeying her husband. Diana, Princess of Wales, set a precedent in 1981 when she promised only to “love, comfort, honour and keep” the Prince of Wales. The Archbishop of Canterbury’s comment earlier this week that Prince William and Miss Middleton had “thought through what they want for themselves, but also what they want to say” has been interpreted as a clue that they want to take their vows as equals. Dr Rowan Williams might even have encouraged Miss Middleton to leave out the vow of obedience, as he has said in the past that for a bride to promise obedience without her husband doing the same is an outdated idea that could be used to justify domestic violence. The Rev Rod Thomas, a member of the General Synod and chairman of the evangelical group Reform, said: “It’s relatively rare for people to make a vow of obedience these days.
