This year is (mercifully) almost over, and there’s no better way to ring in the new year on the right foot than by sitting down in the stylist’s chair and reinventing your look. New year, new ‘do.

While 2016’s most popular looks were all about throwback styles — like the high-top fade and the Gatsby bob — next year, we’re looking to the future. According to celebrity hairstylist and creator of Ouai hair care Jen Atkin and Tresemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu, 2017 will be about making subtle tweaks to what you’ve already got. This is the year to go for those layers or test-drive some eye-grazing bangs — which is perfect for those out there who are afraid of a major chop.

Looking for inspiration? You’ve come to the right place. Ahead, find a few hair trends you’ll totally dig for 2017. Better start booking your appointments now…

Eye-Length Fringe

Want change, but feeling hesitant about a big chop? Atkin suggests long bangs. “I’m loving fringe that hits right at the eye,” she says. “It’s a great way to change up your look without having to take off a lot of length.”

Bonus: Long bangs are incredibly versatile. If you’re not feeling a center fringe one day, just sweep ’em to the side or pin ’em back. You can also style longer bangs in interesting ways. “Add Ouai Matte Pomade to the ends for a more piece-y, textured fringe,” Atkin says.

Natural Hair Textures

This past season, hairstylists sent more and more models down the runway sporting their natural hair textures — and Syfu encourages everyone off the runway to follow suit. “We don’t have time to fuss over blowing out our hair and fighting what it naturally wants to do,” she says. “I think it’s so important to know what your hair and lifestyle can handle to keep your look chic and effortless.”

She says that in order to ace the natural-hair look, it’s important to have a frank conversation with your hairstylist. “Whether I am cutting someone’s hair for the first time or not, I always consider their lifestyle and how much time they are willing to put into their hair,” she says.

Tip: Be upfront with your stylist about the products you use. It’s not a bad idea to go into your session with air-dried strands, so your stylist can get a good read on your ‘do. “My goal is to make your hair look the best I can with less effort in styling by enhancing what is already there,” Syfu says.

Mid-Length Chops

The lob has been wildly popular for years, but 2017’s rendition is a bit different. Namely, Atkin says this mid-length style has a lot more layers. “This is a fun, stylish way to take your lob to the next level,” she says.

If you’re already rocking a shoulder-length ‘do, you may not even need to take off any length. Your stylist could simply add a few layers. By cutting in some texture, you can achieve all manner of looks — like Hailey Baldwin’s beachy waves.

Long, Shiny Strands

Break out your blowdryer, because Atkin predicts the long, glossy blowout is back. “I think that a lot of the girls that cut their hair shorter this past year will be ready to grow it into long, one-length, blunt hair,” she says. “Think Cher and Ali MacGraw’s long, gorgeous hair.”

If you do decide to go the grow-out route — instead of just slapping in some extensions — remember to get regular trims. They’ll keep your ends in great shape.

Cool-Girl Shags

The shag was huge in 2016 — and it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere. “What I love about this silhouette is that the cut really styles itself with soft lines and seamless layers,” Syfu says. “It can work on straight and wavy hair, long or short.”

Syfu says there are many variations on the shag, which can be tailored to your face shape. “The trick to making this cut work is to have your stylist create soft lines with their scissors by point-cutting or using a razor,” she says. Just make sure to have a convo with your stylist ahead of your snip to ensure you’re on the same page.

Bold Chops

This is the year! Time to take the plunge and test-drive a dramatic style. Syfu says that bold, graphic cuts will be huge. “Think heavyweight lines that make your hair swing, like the iconic bobs and wedges,” she says. “I’m also spotting undercuts, buzzed hair, short bobs, and bold bangs all over.”

“These cuts make a statement and can give you an edge that can be quite feminine,” Syfu says. “It gives a strong focus to your gorgeous face, neck, and shoulders.” So if you’re ready to go bold, a blunt bob like this is a killer option.
