celebrities can’t stop rocking these throwback hairstyles

It used to be that if you saw someone dressed like an extra in a Madonna music video, you could safely assume it was October 31 or, at the very least, they were on their way to a themed party. But now, thanks to the popularity of beauty trends from the ’80s and ’90s — like perms, scrunchies, and colored mascara — seeing seriously retro looks on red carpets, magazine covers, and Instagram selfies is to be expected year-round.

In the last week or two, some of our favorite stars — and their expert glam squads — have served up some impressive homages to beauty’s most recognizable icons of the past. Click through the slides ahead to see Mandy Moore, Cardi B, and more decked out in the best throwback beauty looks. It’s enough to make you really miss MTV and strong-hold hairspray.

Big curls are by no means a trend, but it’s safe to say the fuller look is a major callback to the days when Studio 54 was not a place where Luann de Lesseps sometimes sings to tourists eating short ribs. And if Olivia Munn’s bouncy curls styled by John D. don’t remind you of the epic volume of the late ’70s, we don’t know what will.

Slip on a Versace dress, add a scrunchie, and Mandy Moore transforms from primetime actress of 2018 to supermodel Claudia Schiffer circa 1994. But makeup artist Jenn Streicher tells Refinery29 that Moore’s retro homage for the cover of New Beauty wasn’t entirely intentional; rather, it was a last-minute decision to add a brown lipstick and liner that actually turned this into a nostalgic dream.

If anyone’s going to pull out all the stops for their retro beauty look, it’s obviously going to be Cardi B. And when she performed on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she emerged in what was almost an exact replica of Linda Evangelista ‘s Chanel body suit — covered in gold chains, of course. But the homage to Evangelista involed one other crucial piece: a platinum- blonde wig. Created by one of the top wig stylists in Hollywood, Tokyo Stylez, we’re not surprised this look got the seal of approval from Evangelista herself.

Hollywood’s obsession includes copping almost every retro style made popular by Diana Ross — and it’s pure magic. Yes, those are disco vibes you’re feeling from Gabrielle Union rocking this curly ponytail styled by Larry Sims.
