Though it may be the most basic, versatile piece in any working woman’s closet, a good black blazer is a whole lot harder to find than you’d think. Anyone who’s gone shopping for one knows that either the shade’s off, the cut is all wrong, the lapels are too ’90s, or the fabric’s got that man-made-fiber sheen. What’s a girl to do,especially when we’re all looking for different kinds of black blazers?

We went out and road-tested a whole bunch of them to recommend, depending on the kind of situations in which you’ll be wearing your blazers.Stop defaulting to that ill-fitting, kinda-shiny black blazer you inherited from your big sis years ago — get the perfect black blazer, ahead!

Topshop Ponte Rolled Sleeve Blazer

The Everyday Blazer — For a blazer that’d look just as good with jeans and dresses as it does a pair of work trousers, we like the look of a boxier cut in a thinner fabric. This Topshop blazer is the right mix of casual and formal, and is affordable, to boot!

Theory Narolie Wool Blend Blazer

The Suiting Blazer — Theory’s suiting is the modern, professional woman’s go-to work retailer, and their blazers really can’t be beat. The fabric is luxurious and durable, the cuts are never frumpy, and there are a multitude of pant-and-skirt options, so you’ll be able to mix and match to your heart’s content.

H&M Blazer

The Budget Blazer — If you’re starting out into the professional world (or want a cover-up that’ll elevate all those flouncy dresses in your closet), this H&M blazer is an excellent option. At only $48, it features a slim cut and non-glossy fabric that most other budget blazers seem to have.

rag & bone Classic Blazer

The Figure-Flattering Blazer — For women who’d like to maintain (or create!) an hourglass figure while wearing a blazer, this rag & bone jacket is just the ticket. Created in a stiff, structured material, this blazer will hold its waist-shrinking shape, wear after wear.

Alexander McQueen Velvet Balzer

The Evening Blazer — For those really serious about their nighttime looks, you can’t really beat an Alexander McQueen blazer. Dramatic, sexy, and utterly sumptuous, this blazer doesn’t come cheap, but it’s definitely an investment that you’ll find yourself passing onto your grandkids.

Alexander McQueen Velvet Balzer, $2,085, available at Alexander McQueen.

AllSaints Mosley Blazer

The Winter Blazer — For a blazer that could double as a light, winter jacket, it’s important to look for one in a wool or wool blend. This All Saints blazer provides plenty of coverage (just add a scarf!), but doesn’t look too bulky.
