When the opportunity comes along to flaunt your favorite cozy staple as a trend… well, take it and run with it, friends. For us, this means we’re going to be rocking the oversized sweater six days out of seven. Italso means we need to stop styling it with sweatpants and at-home headbands.
But, after spending some time studying the fall runways, we’ve found the solution: five very chic ways to wear oversized sweaters without looking like a potato sack.
The trick is to always juxtapose the heavy knits and bulky shapes with sleek and slim- or short-fitting bottoms like miniskirts, cropped trousers, and skinny jeans. Once you’ve mastered the silhouette, elevate your look with pretty shoes and costume jewelry, and your oversized sweaters will feel right at home no matter where you go… without making it look like you’re actually sitting around at home.
Librarian Chic — Take the opportunity to soften up a sweet dress like this one from Boy By Band of Outsiders. A structured collar and a flippy hemline are only accentuated by a slouchy sweater.
Uniqlo Round Neck Sweater, $27.90, available at Uniqlo; Tory Burch Satchel, $695, available at Tory Burch; Boy By Band Of Outsiders Print Dress, $725, available at La Garconne; Madewell The Aberdeen Oxford, $198, available at Madewell; Otte Plush Fleece Lined Tights, $38, available at OtteNY.
Mixed Textures — The nubby quality of a great sweater calls for some inspired tactile combinations. Pair it with waxed jeans and glossy boots (or vice versa — just pile it on!).
Zara Gem Encrusted Leopard Drops, $17, available at Zara; Urban Expressions Bridget Satchel, $59.95, available at DSW; Mango Oversized Jumper, $70, available at Mango; All Saints Biker Pant, $495, available at All Saints; Ann Taylor Ingrid Booties, $248, available at Ann Taylor.
Short Stack — The puffier the sweater is, the shorter the skirt should be. For ladies who love their minis, an oversized sweater is the perfect topper for chilly days. Don’t forget your tights, though!
Marlene Birger Kittia Mint Sweater, $435, available at Shop Les Nouvelles; Mango Two-Tone Shoulder Bag, $49.99, available at Mango; T By Alexander Wang Oxford Shirt, $175, available at La Garconne; Topshop Diamond Pelmet Skirt, $72, available at Topshop; Jean-Michel Cazabat Shoe, $295, available at Barneys.
Party Animal — For evening soirees, it’s totally cool to wear a sweater, as long as it’s in a bright, poppy color. Wear it with cropped trousers in a luxurious fabric and lots of blingy accessories.
Juicy Couture Rhinestone Necklace, $198, available at Juicy Couture; Saint Laurent Tuxedo Pump, $685, available at YSL; H&M Floral Trousers, $34.95, available at H&M; Acne Yellow Waffle Sweater, $270, available at My Wardrobe; River Island Box Clutch, $48, available at River Island.
Volume + Volume — It’s possible to go big on bottom as well, as long as you’re able to keep your waist cinched. Wearing a skirt in a thick fabric will allow you to tuck in a slouchy sweater.
Alejandro Ingelmo Shoe, $1,050, available at Alejandro Ingelmo; Nektar De Stagni Necklace, $320, available at Marissa Collections; Topshop Knitted Bobble Jumper, $100, available at Topshop; Milly Flared Skirt, $290, available at Net-a-Porter; Hansel From Basel Tights, $36, available La Garconne.
