Homemade cosmetics have a long history where items such as bath salts etc. have long since been used to make makeup and skin-scrubbers.

However, if care is not taken during their preparation and if these are made without keeping in mind the hygiene prospect, it can lead to dire consequences for your skin. Your skin, instead of giving the glowing and smooth effect, will have an acne breakout, allergic reaction, puffed up lips, bruised and inflamed skin and hurting eyes.

It is, therefore, imperative that you keep hygiene and care in mind whilst making homemade cosmetics to get the maximum benefit out of them.  Keeping the following tips will help you achieve the desired results:

1. Use Clean surface

To start off, you have to be absolutely certain that your workplace is clean and free of the ingredients of the product  you last made. This is necessary because the ingredients of the new cosmetic product can react to the previous which may result in the contamination of the end product.

2. Be Careful with Used Equipments

Focusing on the hygiene, this next step is as important as the previous. You have to make sure that the equipments you have already used are thoroughly washed. For instance, you cannot store the newly made cosmetics in a jar or storage container that you use for storing oil or ghee or any other kitchen item.  This way, you are killing your cosmetic.

Always keep the storage containers for cosmetics separately and keep them dry and cleaned.

3. Sterilize the Containers

This has to be the crux of the procedure. Equipments such as metals, aluminum etc. are easily contaminated and impart negativity to your product. For this purpose, you must sterilize the containers. You can do this by dipping the glass bottles, caps, lids, stoppers etc. in the boiling hot water for a couple of minutes or heating them in a pre-heated oven for 5 – 10 minutes to ensure that they are cleaned and contaminant-free.

4. Avoid Metals

Metals such as aluminum have a tendency to react with your product and affect its overall efficacy.

– Use non-stick pans, aluminum and other metal for boiling and heating.

– Always use wooden spoons for stirring. They are neutral and do not react with the ingredients.

– Glass containers are ideal for storage as they prevent air absorption and oxidation that spoil your product.

5. Label the Storage Containers

Labeling the storage container will solve the problems and confusions that may arise in the long run with products that require long storage. Your cosmetics and ingredients will be safe and secure for a long time without any chance of mixing and contamination.
