Good news for those of you who follow a low-maintenance beauty philosophy: Judging by what we saw at New York Fashion Week, fall ’13 is full of easy, barely-there makeup. (Seriously, we can’t count the number of times we saw runway-ready models wearing lip balm and no mascara.) That’s not to say it was all wake-up-and-go, though; fortunately for beauty aficionados, there were plenty of drop-dead gorgeous, inspiring, and all-around stunning looks as well.
So, aside from that whole “no-makeup” makeup look, what are the big trends out of NYFW? Look for the return (again!) of the ’90s, minimalist metallics, a few bold bursts of color, and even a grown-up way to wear glitter. Read on to see the fashion week beauty looks we loved — and will be talking about for months to come.
High-shine copper eyes were the focal point at J. Mendel, where makeup artist Gucci Westman created a glossy effect with Revlon’s ColorStay Smoky Shadow Stick in Atomic and Torch. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Oscar de la Renta has no shortage of tricks up his well-tailored sleeve, going with four distinct makeup and hair themes for his fall ’13 runway show. Our favorite: this easy, downtown-cool look that pairs slightly disheveled hair with a statement-making matte lip. (It’s Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in It Girl, for those keeping score at home.)

Deep side parts were huge for spring ’13, but Zero + Maria Cornejo’s zig-zagging turned the trend on its, er, head. Speaking of next-level looks, we’re also fans of this squared-off cat-eye, whose shape and glossy shine surprised us in the best ways. Wearable, yes. Boring? Not in the slightest.

Talk about clash of the titans: At Costello Tagliapietra, bold purple eyeliner and bright red lips complemented, not competed against, each other. The trick for getting this matte, ultra-pigmented lip? MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger was applied in the center of lips, then topped off with MAC Pro Process Magenta Pigment.

What’s black and white and green all over? The look at Assembly New York, which relied on high-contrast hair, makeup, and nails. While Color Club’s half-and-half nails might suggest a mod influence upon first glance, look again: An evil eye, complete with lashes, sits on the pinky.

The ’90s revival is seemingly unstoppable, with Vera Wang embracing the darker side of the decade. Key makeup artist Lucia Pieroni created a vampy lip with two shades of Clé de Peau Beauté Extra Rich Lipstick: Mister Lincoln and Tuscany. Tousled, mussed-up hair came courtesy of lead hairstylist Paul Hanlon, who worked Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse through damp hair before blowdrying it. His tools? No brushes, no combs — just hands.

Nail art isn’t going anywhere, but it’s certainly growing up. For Prabal Gurung, manicurist Jin Soon Choi created a military-inspired “new moon” manicure with colors from Gurung’s next nail polish collaboration with Sally Hansen. (Fall cannot come soon enough.)

Usually, glitter on the eyes is a little too disco-queen for us. Usually. But, Thakoon’s take on it —NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Marie-Galante with a trio of metallic glitters on top — was among Fashion Week’s most stunning looks. We’ll never doubt our commitment to sparkle motion again.

Metallics went minimal at Derek Lam, where key makeup artist Tom Pecheux previewed Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Instant Intense EyeShadow Trio, out in August. Applying the shadows directly above the pupil created a light-catching effect — and a quite fetching one, too.

We certainly didn’t need another reason to be giddy for Jason Wu’s forthcoming Lancôme collection, but he gave us one anyway. Swept out in a soft winged shape, this rich indigo eyeshadow is a preview of the collaboration — and if the backstage buzz is to be believed, the rest of it is just as gorgeous.
