The Lives of a Bengal Lancer: Snowy Mountain Scalloped Potatoes: Lancer Pose

The Lives of a Bengal Lancer

Gather up your gear, we’re heading north, way north, to the Northwest Frontier of India near the Afghan border right along with the regiment of the British Indian Army known as the Bengal Lancers. Our crew? Gary Cooper, Franchot Tone and a very dangerous cobra to add to the excitement. What I love about this film is that it is filmed on location with lots of local color around the theme of family problems, friendship, loyalty, learning how to communicate with snakes while avoiding getting bit. The polo scenes are not to be missed either. There are loads of karmic lessons in this movie for Gary Cooper fans and a good deal of fun as well. Having difficulty understanding family relationships, making the best of a sticky situation, finding courage in the face of diversity. It’s all right here. But don’t go hungry. Bela’s got a great dish ready for you and later on, you can practice the Lancer’s Pose to get ready to become a Bengal Lancer yourself.

Snowy Mountain Scalloped Potatoes

6 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thin

3 Tablespoons butter

2 Tablespoons butter

3 cups milk

3 Tablespoons all purpose unbleached white flour

1 medium onion, sliced paper thin

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon Curry Powder

Make a white sauce by melting the 3 T’s of butter in a saucepan, adding the flour and dissolving it completely into the butter, then whipping in the milk. Heat on medium temperature, continuing to whip so that it doesn’t burn, as it begins to thicken. Add in salt and pepper. Set aside.

Put on layer of potatoes and onion into a greased casserole; cover with half of the white sauce mixture. Add remaining potatoes, then cover with the remaining sauce.

Sprinkle Curry Powder on top. Cover and bake in a moderately hot oven of 400o for about 1 hour. Just enough time for you to practice some Yoga.

The Lancer’s Pose

What I love about this pose is that is comes from a different Yoga system besides Hatha Yoga. It’s great for learning how to move with precision and very good for learning upper body, hand-movement motor coordination.

Standing with your feet about 1 foot apart, step forward with your left foot, no farther than where it will land without overextending from the hip. This should be about 10-12”.

Raise your left hand so that your pinky finger is facing front and your thumb is facing the center of your chest.

Now, extend your arm, bowed at a 45o angle out in front at chest level.

Raise your right hand as if you are on the telephone, holding the handset. Elbow down.

Breathe in through your nostrils as you twist your torso to the right, to “pull back the Lance”. Hold for a moment to build up some tension. Exhale through the nostrils as you throw the Lance, aiming at an imaginary target; your right hand now extending past the left one (because your left hand and side will naturally retreat). Now repeat on the opposite side.
