Nokia It Ain’t Necessarily So
Nokia Lumia phones are built tough but use a case and screen protector to avoid screen scratches

By Stephen Pate – As the video shows, Nokia and other smartphone manufacturers work hard to keep our phones in one piece.

Considering the places we take and put our phones, it's a wonder they survive the journey. Plenty of phones get cracked screens from the knocks we put them through. I shudder when I see the cracked iPhone 4 and 5 screens on my children's phones.

While Nokia Lumia phones are tough they still need a protective case and apparently a screen cover.

I noticed my Nokia 920 could survive a fall on the floor but not going in and out of my pocket and bag without many screen scratches. @NokiaCareUS's answer to that is they "recommend using a screen protector to avoid scratching the phone."

Some say the Gorilla Glass is not scratching: a protective film that covers the screen is getting scratched. The problem has been reported on Windows Phone Central and Nokia Support.

Surface scratches were common on the 1st Gen iPhones but somehow Apple got that fixed. My 3-year-old iPhone 4 is almost perfect on the glass but my 1-year-old Nokia Lumia 920 looks like it has been through a bag of gravel.

The scratches don't affect the Lumia's performance but they are worrying. Will the glass eventually crack? It might be like getting used to the parking lot dings and scratches in a new car.

The only difference is that the Lumia seems to be prone to them. As one person commented they have "many scratches on Lumia 920 surface. I keep it in my pocket with paper money and an iPhone 4s. The iPhone has no scratches on the glass surface. The Samsung galaxy that I used to use had no scratches either."

Use a screen protector is the official answer which means they don't have a fix.

  1. Interesting article.

You say: “My 3-year-old iPhone 4 is almost perfect on the glass but my 1-year-old Nokia Lumia 920 looks like it has been through a bag of gravel.”

    Funny.
    Iphone 4 = Gorilla Glass 1
    Lumia 920 = Gorilla Glass 2

Apparently the newer Gorilla Glass is worse than the old one.
Or… something is wrong with your statements.
    Obviously
