Surface Pro 3
Microsoft has reduced the price on last the Surface Pro 3’s for a limited time

By Stephen Pate – The Microsoft Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the latest model from Microsoft of its popular tablet promoted as a laptop replacement. The reviews say the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Pro 3 have only minor differences in performance but there can be big differences in prices between the Pro 3 and Pro 4, especially in Canada.

The Microsoft Surface Pro has become a popular tablet for business users and people who want to use Windows programs. Microsoft reported their sales are up 60% to 500,000 per month.

You can still pick up the Surface Pro 3 for a bargain starting at $699 for the Surface Pro 3 64 GB / Intel Core i3icon.  In Canada the Surface Pro 3 64 GB / Intel Core i3  costs $949 on sale which is a very good price.

Move up to the more powerful Surface Pro 3 256 GB / Intel Core i5 and the Canadian price is only $1,279, a $290 savings. This is the perfect laptop / tablet for someone who wants to do multi-tasking with 8 GB of RAM.

This time the Canadian price is $200 less that the US price. In the United States the same Surface Pro 3 – 256GB / Intel Core i5 costs $1,199. If you can convince Microsoft to ship it into the US the Canadian item is only $980 US.

The Surface Pro 3 256 GB / Intel Core i7 costs $1,549 in Canada (equivalent to US $1,190) and $1,449 at Microsoft Store USA.

The price includes the Surface Pen. The type cover is extra which some reviewers criticize but it’s extra for an iPad as well.

Hint – get the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover  with your Surface Pro 3. The new version is stiffer and has a better track-pad, one of the complaints about the Surface Pro 3. (In Canada Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover.) The new model costs $10 more and is worth it.

Reviews of the Surface Pro 3 and 4

Other than the Surface Pen, Type Pad and lower powered processor, most reviewers are giving the Surface Pro 4 only an incremental improved rating.

Engadget said “The biggest knock against the Surface Pro 4 is that it looks just like the Surface Pro 3. But honestly, that’s not a huge complaint since the Pro 3 still feels like a marvel of engineering today…When it comes down to pure computational performance, I didn’t feel a huge difference between the Surface Pro 4 and the Pro 3”.

The Verge said “I’ve used the Surface Pro 3 quite a bit, and I haven’t noticed a big a performance difference between the two in real-world use.”

There are obviously differences like a better screen and refinements but do they really matter when the price is higher. Check out the charts below.
