Acharya Sri Khadi MadamaEpisode – 17

Gracie’s teacher went around the room to ask each student what their historical event report was going to be. When it was Gracie’s turn, she immediately sat bolt upright and answered, “Titanic”. “I’m going to do a report on what happened, but I’m also going to include my ideas of what might have happened if Titanic didn’t sink, because I think that it shouldn’t have done”, Gracie blurted out. “In fact, my mother knows someone who’s uncle was lost on Titanic, and I think that’s just terrible”, Gracie said, sounding a little sad. Her teacher responded that that would be a very interesting report, indeed, but that Gracie should focus on the historical facts first and then just include her personal thoughts as a kind of extra. “Yes, Ma’am”, Gracie replied. Then the teacher continued questioning the others around the room and the rest of students offered what their reports were going to be.

It seemed like forever before the end of the day and before Gracie could get to the school library to start her research. She had done so much reading about Titanic in books. She’d also been to the huge exhibit a couple of years back and, of course, seen the movie. She even had a tiny piece of coal that her mother purchased for her from Titanic’s coal room, which she truly treasured. Sometimes she even imagined that she was a passenger on board, but the story in her mind always ended before the tragedy took place.

A few moments later, Gracie entered the school’s library. It was old and full of wooden bookshelves and comfortable tables and chairs to make researching anything quite comfortable. The librarian smiled at her as she walked up to the reference desk. Gracie asked for the best reference book on Titanic for a school report and it wasn’t long before the librarian had disappeared behind a huge bookshelf and then reappeard with a very impressively massive book. Gracie thanked her and took the book to one of the comfortable chairs that sat towards the back of the room. There was at least 2 hours before the library would close for the day so there was certainly ample time for Gracie to look up everything she needed to craft the perfect report.
