Ashish Gupta is on the road to everywhere. With some cash, a laptop, a phone, a camera and a credit card (“for emergencies”) for company, the 30-year-old from Gurgaon plans to cover 43 cities, big and small, across India over 90 days, travelling only by public transport. On the way, he’ll blog on his adventures.

Gupta is undertaking the adventure as part of Airtel’s initiative of making a billion friends and is being supported by travel portal www.oktatabyebye.com, on which he’ll be posting his blog. He has already covered 10 cities, beginning with Dharamshala and moving on to Amritsar, Wagah, Chandigarh, Shimla, Haridwar and Rishikesh, among others. The unique part of the journey is that his stay depends entirely on invitations extended to him by the site’s members.

Gupta, who quit a plum IT job to pursue his passion, says, “I see myself as an ordinary guy travelling around India. I’m just enabling the means and modes of travel to others who’re interested… if I can do it, they can too.”

He has one word of advice for travel aficionados. “For most people, the modes of travel between two places may seem an impediment,” he says. “Don’t think about getting tired or dirty. Just step into the state bus and go!”
