With the flawless victory in the Group stage within Group of death, favourites Germany would take on underdogs Greece in the second quarter-final of Euro 2012 played at Arena Gdansk in Gdansk. Friday night’s game will become the 9th meeting between the two sides over the years.
The Germans are regarded as the favorites after beating the group teams Portugal, Denmark and bitter rivals Netherlands. Germany also have history on their side apart from their winning pace. They have never lost to Greece in eight previous clashes and have also won all four European Championship quarter-finals they have contested.
Germany has a FIFA ranking of 2. Germany are known for direct pass-and-play technique and they do not need to change their style to proceed to further in the tournament. The probable line up for Germany include: Nuer, Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Muller, Ozil, Podolski, Gomez.
The Greeks cannot be underestimated after their victory over Russia with 1-0. They have successfully revived the memories of Euro 2004 triumph as they climbed their way to knock out stage. Greece had the least probability to qualify after ending in a draw against co-host Poland and losing against Czech Republic. But a goal from captain and talisman Giorgos Karagounis in their final group match against Russia made their way to seal a quarter-final berth.
Greece owns a 14th spot in the FIFA rankings. Coach Fernando Santos’ side will now face Germany - the best team of the tournament and this will arguably be Greece’s toughest game so far. The Greek probable squad include: Sifakis, Torossidis, Papadopoulos, Tzavelas, Papastathopoulos, Maniatis, Katsouranis, Fotakis, Fetfatzidis, Salpingidis, Samaras.
Though Germany are predicted to be favourites to reach the Semis, the Greeks are known for their resistance and ability to strike back as they did in 2004, beating France 1-0 in their only previous quarter-finals appearance.
