At the end of 2nd day’s play, Australia took an alarming lead of 284 runs in the second Test against Sri Lanka after scoring 440 for 8.
Australian skipper, Michael Clarke made century to become his country’s highest Test run-scorer in 2012. He successfully crossed Ricky Ponting’s 1,544 runs during 2005 with his 106 innings, before tail-ender Mitchell Johnson scored an unbeaten 73.
Sri Lanka scored only 156 on day one and had six-run lead day’s start. The seamer Chanaka Welegedera suffered hamstring injury in the morning and the remaining bowlers made a little harm to the hosts. Clarke and Shane Watson composed a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership of 194 against Sri Lanka.
Clarke’s fifth Test century of 2012 and 22nd of his career, pushed him towards 1,595 runs for the year and fourth on the all-time list behind Mohammad Yousuf (1,788 runs), Viv Richards (1,710) and Graeme Smith (1,656). Clarke was dismissed at Shaminda Eranga delivery caught by Mahela Jayawardene in the slips. Afterwards, Watson (83) and Matthew Wade (1) fell in quick succession.
The quick wickets refreshed the tourists’ hopes to save the match but hosts made a comeback with a 61 run stand for seventh wicket from Mike Hussey and Johnson.
Hussey was caught for 34 off spinner Tillakaratne Dilshan. Johnson, after having a four-wicket haul, scored his seventh half-century. Siddle was removed at 13 caught by Jayawardene in the slip as Eranga’s second wicket.
