Music Review: Tum Bin 2

EXPECTATIONS

The music of Tum Bin is remembered till date. In fact back then on its release, it had turned out to be a trendsetter, what with the title song ‘Tum Bin’, ‘Chhoti Chhoti Raatein’, ‘Tumharay Siva’, ‘Meri Duniya Mein’, ‘Daroo Vich Pyaar’ and of course the legendary track, ‘Koi Fariyaad’, emerging as huge chartbusters. The songs continue to play on even though 15 years have passed by since the release of Tum Bin [2001], which had marked the debut of producer Bhushan Kumar and director Anubhav Sinha. No wonder, there are massive expectations from Ankit Tiwari and Manoj Muntashir’s Tum Bin 2 which brings back the duo.

MUSIC

It is just befitting for the soundtrack that Jagjit Singh, Nikhil-Vinay and Faaiz Anwar’s ‘Koi Fariyaad’ is recreated as ‘Teri Fariyaad’ by Ankit Tiwari and Shakeel Azmi. They do really well by retaining Jagjit Singh’s portions in the song and the coming in of Rekha Bhardwaj into the fold of things makes for a perfect combination. The song moves ahead in a seamless avtar and what works tremendously well is the integration that happens between the yesteryear’s song with the current mood and setting that has been created in Tum Bin 2. Later, an ‘extended version’ is included as well and that can be further played repeatedly.

As is expected from the film, a series of romantic numbers are incorporated into the soundtrack of Tum Bin 2. The one that arrives next is ‘Ishq Mubarak’ which has a sufi base to it and a tune which is really easy on ears. Arijit Singh is in his elements with this love song which has a quintessential Bollywood feel to it and the singer renders it in a manner which can never go out of style. Another song that has in it to move up the charts.

The song that follows next, ‘Dekh Lena’, instantly reminds one of a couple of chartbusters that have already ruled the charts in 2016, ‘Soch Na Sake’ [Airlift] and ‘Tere Sang Yaara’ [Rustom]. If you had liked these couple of songs, it is pretty much on the cards that you would pick on this beautiful song rendered by Arijit Singh and Tulsi Kumar as well. While Arijit continues to be quite good here, the sweet vocals of Tulsi Kumar do the trick as well in ensuring that this one turns out to be a melodic outing.

After a couple of sugar-n-saccharine romantic tracks, it is time to go a tad sombre with the title song, ‘Tum Bin’. Ankit Tiwari picks up the mantle this time around and brings himself on the forefront as the singer as well for the song. Though the songs before this were instantly catchy, it takes some time before you pick the tune, considering its slow pace as well as the many manoeuvres that it takes. That said, if the film turns out to be successful at the Box Office, the song has in it to enjoy a long stay in the mind of music lovers.

The moment ‘Masta’ begins, you are instantly reminded of ‘Ilahi’ [Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani]. That’s more due to the choice of instruments and the setting of the song as beyond that this Vishal Dadlani and Neeti Mohan manages to have an identity of its own. This one has a happy feel about it and is the kind that is sung as well as choreographed with a smile on the face. The song, when it appears in the narrative, should perk up the proceedings.

Composer Ankit Tiwari brings Arko Pravo Mukherjee and Payal Dev together for ‘Dil Nawaziyaan’, yet another romantic number that fills in the soundtrack after ‘Ishq Mubarak’ and ‘Dekh Lena’. While the beginning of the song by Arko Pravo Mukherjee has a contemporary sound to it, soon after Payal Dev brings on semi-classical rendition as well that brings on some variety. The song should fit in well as a part of the entire storytelling, what with an inherent feel good impact that it manages to create.

It is the sound of nursery rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty’ in the voice of Harshi Mad that is heard first. She is soon joined by cricketer and singer DJ Bravo who is clearly enjoying a good time behind the mike with ‘Jaegar Bomb’. While the hook here is good and the pace is right too, eventually it would boil down to how the song – which has Ankit Tiwari bringing himself behind the mike as a singer as well – is picturised.

OVERALL

The music of Tum Bin 2 manages to register a good impression and engages as well as entertains a listener right through its 45 minutes of playing time. With good variety coming in, this one should play on for many more weeks to come. As for the its longer stay in the mind of the listener, one waits for the film to release as that would have a good role to play in the shelf life of the soundtrack.
