Music Review: Qaidi Band

EXPECTATIONS

Considering the fact that Qaidi Band is a musical due to its very premise (that of a band being set in a jail), you expect music to be the core strength of the film. That said, there hasn’t really been much of a build up around the soundtrack so far and since the film is less than a month away from release, one ends up wondering what do composer Amit Trivedi along with lyricists Habib Faisal and Kausar Munir have to offer.

MUSIC

There are as many as nine tracks in the film and the good part about the soundtrack is that Arijit Singh and Yashita Sharma are the voice of the lead couple for each one of them. First to arrive is the flagship song of the album, ‘I Am India’. Written by Habib Faisal, this one actually ends up being rather irritating on the ear as you are put off rather than being attracted to the sound of the song. It tries to be all entertaining and patriotic but instead ends up being rather old fashioned in its treatment. Amit Trivedi makes a guest appearance as a singer in the ‘Escape’ version of the song but the tune by itself fails to make an impact.

The song that follows, ‘Hulchul’, is a rock outing and Arijit ensures that he sounds different from his usual self. He gets good company of Yashita Sharma who also comes up with a forceful rendition. That said, the song stays on to be primarily situational and hence its impact would be felt more as a part of the film’s narrative. In some ways, this one also reminds one of the kind of songs that were heard in Rock On.

The sound of ‘santoor’ that is heard at the beginning of ‘Phir Nayi’ reminds one of the kind of music that Shiv-Hari used to compose for Yash Chopra more than a couple of decades ago. In fact the faint sound of flute in the background also goes with the flow. However, overall this Kausar Munir written number, which later arrives as ‘Phir Wohi’, again sticks to being quintessentially situational as you don’t quite see yourself humming this one on a lazy ride.

The song that follows, ‘Junooni’, actually turns out to be the better of the lot that has been heard so far and actually makes for a pleasant hear. Written by Sidhant Mago and Kausar Munir, this one is situational as well with a rock base to it. However, you like what Arijit Singh and Yashita Sharma have to offer in this love song that has a good flow to it and has that Yash Raj sound which you expect from a film of theirs.

It is back to Amit Trivedi brand of music soon after though with Kausar Munir writing ‘Udanchoo’ that again has Arijit Singh and Yashita Sharma coming together. There is also a faint reference of ‘I Am India’ somewhere in the background and even though the song maintains a good pace right through its duration, you don’t really warm up to it even after a couple of hearing.

Rapper Peter Muxka Manuel kick-starts the proceedings for ‘Jag Mag’ which is written by Habib Faisal and this turns out to be the weakest song of the album. Sounding like a jingle for an advertisement, this Arijit Singh and Yashita Sharma sung track is forgettable from the word ‘go’ and you quickly move on to the next tracks which is written by Kausar Munir. Titled ‘Poshampa’, this has a retro beginning to it. However as it turns out, these brief moments turn out to be the best part of the song as soon enough Arijit and Yashita come on the scene and you end up hearing yet another mediocre track that is forgettable.

OVERALL

The music of Qaidi Band is forgettable. Period.
