It is in fact rather surprising to actually see a soundtrack for Dharam Sankat Mein. Typically, films belonging to this genre may have a token song or two with a devotional number thrown in. However, composers Meet Bros Anjjan, Sachin Gupta and Jatinder Shah come together to deliver an ensemble affair which spans across five numbers with a few remixes added as well. With Kumaar as the lyricist, you know that the album does have commercial aspects in mind as well. Moreover, since a couple of special song and dance numbers are already on air, whatever that one gets to hear in Dharam Sankat Mein is a bonus indeed.
Music
Gippy Grewal makes his Bollywood debut with 'Tu Takke Tu' with which he makes his special song and dance appearance. The actor-singer does a good job behind the camera as well as in front of it as he goes about bringing in good energy for this foot tapping number, put together by Meet Bros Anjjan (who also make their mandatory appearance pretty early in the song). A quick-fire number that has an easy rhythm to it, it never once loses pace, courtesy the arrival of Khushboo Grewal who does what one expects from Sunidhi Chauhan for songs belonging to this genre.
An 'MBA Swag' version appears later and there is further authenticity added to the scheme of things, courtesy Kaptan Laadi & RDK making the song their own. Though there isn't much to differentiate between the two, the song helps in recollection value as you get pretty used to the sound by the time the entire soundtrack is through.
Aman Trikha is heard in a different avatar as he goes about rendering 'Shiv Tandav'. A haunting piece which is designed to up the ante in the dramatic appeal of the film, it is basically designed for the situation in the film and hence its play would be restricted to the play of the film. The track is unique in the manner that there are minimal instruments in the background as vocals hold center-stage.
I am led to believe that 'Neelanand Baba' was designed as a hammy number to make a statement on the 'babas' since composer Sachin Gupta has been known to deliver better. For this one, he goes about putting together a parody outing that hails a 'baba' [played by Naseeruddin Shah] in the film. Perhaps it would go with the comic turn of events in the film because as a standalone number, this Ravi Chowdhary sung number doesn't hold much weight either in its original or the 'remix' version.
Later, Ravi Chowdhary is heard in a diametrically opposite number 'Allah Hoo', which has serious undertones. Yet another Sachin Gupta composition, it is one of those numbers that arrive in the second half of the film when proceedings take a turn towards getting a tad serious. Going with the theme of the film when the central protagonist is caught in 'dharam sankat' where he has to wonder if he is a Hindu or a Muslim, the song should be a decent fit for a situational outing. The song appears again immediately after Pardeep Sran coming behind the mike. Yet again, the job in hand is, to basically up the recollection quotient.
Just when one wondered that the album would culminate on a rather pensive note, there comes a peppy number 'Do You Know Baby'. Now this one is indeed a grand finale as Gippy Grewal continues from where he left in 'Tu Takke Tu' and brings on an out and out fun number. Rest assured, both his tracks would continue to play long after the film is off theaters. As for its appearance in the film, there should be good takers, considering the fact that Sophie Choudry sizzles alongside Gippy in the video.
Overall
The music of Dharam Sankat Mein promises a little more than expected because as mentioned earlier, whatever that one gets in the soundtrack was meant to be bonus. In that aspect, a couple of peppy numbers as well as a decent situational song or two keep the interest level alive in the album.
