Calendar Girls is one of the rare youth centric films from Madhur Bhandarkar, who has otherwise made heavy-duty dramatic encounters like Heroine and Fashion in the recent times. His Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji was romantic in appeal and had a few hummable songs. Now for Calendar Girls, one expects a vibrant score and Bhandarkar has done well by roping in composers Meet Bros Anjjan and Amaal Mallik along with lyricist Kumaar to do the honours.

MUSIC

There is a wonderful hook that kick-starts the proceedings for Meet Bros Anjjan's 'Awesome Mora Mahiya' that boasts of Hinglish lyrics by Kumaar. A party song which has Khushboo Grewal coming behind the mike, it gets into the third gear from the word 'go' and only keeps the momentum going with every passing moment. A kind of number that would have qualified as a disco number back in the early 80s, it is one of those rare numbers that also has a good 'antara' portion following an impressive 'mukhda'. With heavy dose of glamour quotient imbibed in the proceedings, it also makes for a visually arresting number.

With a retro appeal to it, 'We Will Rock The World' has Neha Kakkar's voice being heard along with that of Khushboo Grewal and while the start is decent, it is the hook in the title which gets the song going. Yes, it does seem like a jingle in its treatment but as it moves to the 'antara' portion, there is a definite Bollywood treatment by Meet Bros Anjjan which is apparent, something that makes 'We Will Rock The World' a good situational number. Expect a montage sequence on play here with the five 'Calendar Girls' painting the town red with their act.

What comes next is a very pleasant surprise as Amaal Mallik delivers a soothing 'Khwaishein' which arrives in a 'Rock Version' first. A beautiful number which is worth many hear, 'Khwaishein' is a theme track with an inherent sad appeal to it that has a soft rock setting and makes one hum along as it plays. Reminding of the kind of songs that made Life In A…Metro an album that is remembered till date, 'Khwaishein' has Arijit Singh in good form who proves yet again that he is simply the best choice today for songs belonging to this genre. Later, Armaan Malik is brought on board for the 'Film Version' which makes one believe that Calendar Girls would certainly have a lot more to offer than just the glamour quotient on-screen. A slow moving number that indeed impresses, it makes one revisit 'Khwaishen' all over again.

Last to arrive is 'Shaadi Wali Night' which is yet another Hinglish number, this time in a celebration mode. Aditi Singh Sharma makes the song her own as she comes up with a spirited rendition that should find a place in the DJ's collection while playing dance numbers in 'shaadi-byaah' festivities up North. With a good rhythm to it which is instantly catchy, 'Shaadi Wali Night' has a good mix of hook and beats to it that makes for a pleasant hear right through its play.

OVERALL

The music of Calendar Girls delivers more than expected and is actually a wholesome soundtrack that compliments the mood and spirit of 'Calendar Girls'. While one would have expected at maximum situational numbers for the film, the coming together of Meet Bros Anjjan, Amaal Mallik and Kumaar makes sure that you get a quick- fire 21 minute soundtrack that never has a dull moment.
