Bob Dylan The Basement Tapes Bootleg 11 app arrives on App Store

By Stephen Pate – Almost immediately after the iTunes download of The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 The Basement Tapes, the Apple Bob Dylan Bootleg Companion App was updated for the new release.

That’s the good news. The bad news is Sony Legacy Records cheapened up and only covers 10 of 138 songs on Bootleg 11.

The Bootleg App is free but it was a major marketing ploy for Sony on Bootleg 10. Industry chatter said the app drove cd and download sales double expectations. The Bootleg 10 App covered 36 of 54 songs on the release.

For Bootleg 11, Sony tightened the purse strings with only coverage of 10 of 138 songs.

Is Sony the skin flint or is it Dylan himself pulling the purse strings tighter?

This is the second cheap shot this year from Dylan Inc and Sony. For 2 months they advertised The Lyrics Since 1962 with a fancy slipcase. On the day the $150 book shipped, Dylan Inc changed the description to remove the book’s slipcase. I wrote Sony asking for an explanation or fix. No word yet.
