UNMISS officials handing over the completed computer center and a library to Torit Day Secondary as a government officials look on [©Gurtong]The State’s civil servants are expected to benefit from the projects too.
  
The inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday 28 February 2012 at Torit Day Secondary School in Torit town where the facility is situated.

The project is being implemented by Bangladesh Battalion in cooperation with the EES ministry of education; the project whose funder is UNMISS’ Quick Impact Project (QIP), comprises of a computer center consisting of 10 computers and necessary accessories as well as a library with 175 books recommended by the school management, the EES’ UNMISS Coordinator, Madam Winnie Babihuga disclosed.
 
On behalf of the EES Governor, the caretaker State Minister of Agriculture Mr. Jerome Surur Gama received the keys to the computer center and library from Winnie Babihuga. 
  
Madam Babihuga articulated that the computer centre and library are a gateway to excellence in education and expressed that the project demonstrated the partnership that the UNMISS emphasizes in the execution of its mandate. 
 
Mr. Surur and his colleagues expressed their gratitude to UNMISS-EES for assisting the State in its efforts to boost the quality of education. 
 
“The computer center is going to be a big boost to our government particularly in the education sector,” the minister said.
  
The minister also explained that the center will be of much assistance to the State in building the capacity of the civil servants. The center is meant to provide training to director generals and other senior civil servants after working hours and after school hours since the facility is situated within the school compound. 
 
While appealing to the development partners to expand similar projects to all the 8 Counties in the State, the caretaker Minister advised students and the general public interested to learn the new technology especially the civil servants to utilize the facility.

A UNMISS force commander Major General Moses Bisong Obi reiterated that the mission will continue supporting the government up to County level and added that education is among the key areas of cooperation. 
  
“South Sudan is a new nation and the challenges are too much, so the policy of the mission is to render services not only in Juba and the State headquarters but down to County levels so that we can work together as a team,” said the force commander.

Bangladesh Battalion 6 Commander, Colonel Kamrul Hasan explained that in order to further develop the computer center to a multi-media center, the Bangladesh Battalion is going to install internet in the coming weeks. 
  
“Bangladesh contingent will contribute by providing facilities to enable leaners to access Internet in all the computers and to fully access information,” he said.

Colonel Kamrul also said that in order to ensure proper operation and utilization of the computer center, UNMISS Bangladesh Battalion has trained three computer trainers who will teach in the center. He added that the quick impact project will cover salaries of those trainers and fuel for generator for the coming three months.

“UNMISS-EES is also assisting in other areas of development mainly in land reclamation of flooded areas in order to provide agricultural land for returnees in the State and establishment of Demobilization,” Madam Babihuga announced.
