Praful Patel, ex-civil aviation minister and heavy industries minister has been highlighted in a case in Canada where an Indian Canadian has claimed to have bribed Patel to get hands on a cancelled contract for Air India supplies.
The Indian government officer was named in Canadian newspapers on investigation of a fraud and corruption case. Mr. Patel called the accusation “false and baseless” in a report and requested the Prime Minister to provide him with all the documents and records investigated by any agency or are relevant to the case in order to update the Canadian authorities to save “embarrassment to the Government of India or to me personally,” as said by Patel.
The Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, stated that the Canadian authorities are planning to take up Nazir Karigar, an Indian-born-Canadian-citizen, to court for violating the Foreign Public Officials Act. The Act prohibits Canadian citizens to offer any bribe or “attempted payments” abroad.
According to the newspapers, Karigar who is 64 years of age was the representative of CryptoMetrics India and tried to get a 100 million USD contract for supplying facial recognition equipment to Air India. The contract was never executed.
The case has surfaced due to Canada’s attempts to clarify its image as a lenient country in terms of foreign corruption.
