The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gillani files an appeal against the Supreme Court’s orders summoning him in the case of contempt of court.
Gillani has been accused of contempt of court in an earlier case where the Supreme Court ordered the prime minister to write a letter to the Swiss authorities about bank statements and reopening of corruption cases, which also includes several cases on the President of Pakistan and the co-chair person of the Pakistan People’s Party, Asif Ali Zardari.
The Prime Minister was summoned by the Supreme Court on 13th of February for the hearing of the case, to which the lawyer of PM Aitzaz Ahsen said that an appeal has been filed on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court accepted the appeal filed by PM and his lawyer and set up an intra-court hearing for Thursday against the verdict of summoning him in regards to contempt of court. Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry requested the panel to hear the plea before 10th of Feb so there is no further lag in the routine hearing of the case, whatever the decision of the bench is. Keeping this in mind, he suggested that the plea should be heard Thursday morning if agreed upon by the petitioner since Friday is a busy day for the court.
If, the Prime Minister is convicted in the contempt of court case, he could lose his job and further be sentenced to jail.
