The United Nations Security Council, UNSC has called for mutual relationship between South and North Sudan. The council also urged the two parties to end the escalating conflict in the contested area of Abyei.

While addressing the press yesterday evening at the United Nations Mission in Sudan, UNMIS’s compound in Juba, the Council assured South Sudan for United Nations’ and International community support for the new nation to be graced on July 9th.

Suzan Rice, the Head of the delegation said that, the new nation of South Sudan will need much in terms of development in almost all the sectors.

However, she added that, the primary responsibility of building the would-be State lies solely in the hands of the people of South Sudan.

The United States’ envoy to the UN also said it is in the interest of the international community to have two viable and friendly States of the North and South Sudan that have mutually beneficial relations.

“As neighbours and whatever the case may be, the co-existence and bilateral relationships between the two regions is paramount,” Rice reiterated.

She added that, “The responsibility of creating peace in Abyei and alleviate the looming humanitarian crisis is not a one body’s task, but needs collective efforts from both the Governments of South Sudan and Khartoum with the help of the international community.”

The UN envoy has been in a three-day visit to Sudan shortly after violence erupted in the disputed region of Abyei.

At the press conference, Rice stressed the UN’s call for the immediate withdrawal of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) which has taken over Abyei since the clashes erupted.

She described the insecurity situation in South Sudan as serious and called for the Government’s full efforts to ensure peace and stability for its people.

The Council’s briefing with the press in Juba followed meetings they had earlier with the civil societies, stakeholders, the Government and the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
