Speaking at the 29th SPLA anniversary celebrations in the state capital Jonglei, Governor Juuk discouraged the citizens from idling, but instead urged them to work hard towards protecting and sustaining their independence.

“The liberation fighters did not sleep but instead fought day and night to ensure we are where we are today. Similarly, you should all work hard in your farms to boost agricultural production in order to keep hunger at bay”, he said.

He encouraged the youth to participate in development activities instead of idling around and over-relying on their parents.

“Being idle will lead you to involvement in criminal activities which will in turn land you in jail. You have to get out and work for yourselves”, he told the youth.

Jonglei State has a historic significance to the SPLA as it is in the town of Malual-chat that clashes broke out between Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in 1983.

Thousands of residents turned up for the celebrations held at the State General Secretariat headquarters in Bor town.

Also in attendance were key state government officials and the organised forces comprising the Prisons Services, the Police, Fire Bridge, Wildlife Services and pupils from several primary schools.

This was the first ever SPLA celebrations in the state after the independence of South Sudan last July.
