Torit County Commissioner Major William Oyet Omoro has issued the directive notifying illegal occupants of government land at Hai Sujun Prison, Hai Jiftalia Hospital, Hai Slak/Jees Army Barracks and Hai Batari veterinary premises to vacate within eight months to pave way for development by local authorities. The notice expires on 30 January 2013.

The Commissioner’s order also affects those illegally occupying or building on public playing grounds and any other open spaces in the state capital.

“After 30 January 2013, we believe the occupants would have built their own houses on appropriate lands. This ample time is to enable you build your house and clear the land accordingly. … Your cooperation is highly anticipated”, reads part of the order.

Speaking on the State Government- owned radio 97.5 FM last evening, the Commissioner disclosed that a committee to follow up on the eviction order is being constituted.

“This committee will not only ensure the order is implemented but will also seek to establish the illegal occupants and allocate them alternative land for development”, said Major Omoro.

A section of victims who talked to Gurtong expressed concern over the short period of the eviction notice, saying the eight months will not be sufficient to enable them acquire alternative land.
