South Sudan Chief Negotiator Pagan Amum who leads the delegation said the meeting is part of the implementation of the African Union Peace and Security Council roadmap backed by the UN Security Council.

“The lead negotiating team of the Republic of South Sudan is departing today to Addis Ababa to attend the resumption of talks on the invitation of the African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHLP)”, Pagan told the press at the Juba Airport before leaving.

“We are returning to the talks ready to negotiate with the government of Sudan on all the outstanding issues and to discuss, review the implementation of the AU and the UN resolutions”, added Amum.

“South Sudan is more confident this time that the talks will yield fruits. The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution conditioning the two parties to finalise the talks within three months. We are actually more optimistic than before and this is good as there is international backing”, he said.

Prior to South Sudan secession in July last year and the end of the historic Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) a number of issues have remained unresolved between the two countries.

The sharing of oil revenues, the Abyei oil region, border demarcation and insecurity among others have remained key issues.

The incursion by Sudan on South Sudanese soil has slowed down the talks.
