This is a memorial day the late former Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) leader Dr John Garang de Mabior passed away in the tragic helicoptercrash in 2005.

The day is marked for commemoration of all those who sacrificed and lost their lives to realise freedom and peace in South Sudan.

Speaking during the mass prayer, State Governor Rizik Zackaria Hassan called upon the citizens to remember those who lost their lives for the sake of the freedom of the Republic of South Sudan.

“Today is the day that we have to give thanks to Dr John Garang along with those who lost their lives for the sake of liberating South Sudan”, Hassan said.

Hassan said that Garang’s vision was to liberate the whole Sudan through the powers of SPLM from the regime that discriminated against the rights of the citizens.

The SPLM State Secretary Paulino Adam Naro said in a speech thatthere is a need for South Sudanese to stand on protecting their identity and freedom.

Naro urged the state businessmen to avoid increasing prices of commodities in order to protect the economy since Sudan has cut off it trade relation with South Sudan.

Meanwhile the State Information Minister Derik Alfred Uya described the day as a “historical day” which will not be easily forgotten by the young generation of South Sudan.

The morning mass prayer was attended by thousands of Christians at Wau who paid tribute to the national heroes who lost their lives for the freedom of the people of South Sudan.

South Sudan has since gained independence and the vision of John Garang was to liberate the whole Sudan and bring sustainable peace.

Sudan is still facing some unrest against the Khartoum government in Blue Nile, South Kordofan and South Darfur States.

The vision of SPLM under the leadership of Dr Garang was to give each equal right and freedom in the Country.

He was probably the greatest Sudanese politician in the history of Sudan.

Dr Garang died under suspicious circumstance in a plane crash on 30July 2005.

He equally opened a free chance and choice for his country to be ruled through democracy, harmony and social cohesion.

The former rebels controlling the regional South Sudan territory and National Congress Party (NCP) party signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in the Kenyan Capital Nairobi ending 21years of war.

Garang was sworn in as the First Vice President of Republic of Sudan and Presidentof the semi autonomous region of Southern Sudan which has now become the Republic of South Sudan.

Those in attendance at the celebrations included Fifth Division Commander Andrea Dominic, State Legislative Assembly Members and other stakeholders.
