Yei River County is one of the highly populated counties in South Sudan and with such a huge population, the county authorities are faced with a challenge in providing clean water to the increasing population.

Gladys Paya, a 70 year old woman who expressed her concerns over the risk of using contaminated water sources.

Paya blames the leadership at the bomas and the county for not taking action on the challenges by the citizens in the community.

“The leaders in the Boma are not committed in following and submitting challenges that citizens in the community face which in the end affect the health of the people in the community. If they care about us, why are they not coming down to the community to see the type of water we drink?” she asked.

However, the County Assistant Commissioner for Water and Sanitation, Juma Hassan Mansua said the administration is trying to put in strategies to solve the water and sanitation challenges.

Mansua urged the citizens to be patient as the government lobbys for support from humanitarian agencies to rescue the worsening situation in the residential areas.

Yei is a medium-sized city in South Sudan’s southwest to the borders Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is a business hub, attracting traders and customers from all three countries.

As the city became safer, later during the civil war, South Sudanese from other parts of the country, particularly from the Bahr el Ghazal region, began flocking to Yei for safety, and later for humanitarian assistance.

The area around Yei receives adequate rainfall year-round, which allows for the cultivation of food and cash crops as well as the raising of domestic livestock.

Coffee and cassava are some of the crops grown locally.
