South Africa celebrated the 95th birthday of Nobel Prize winner Nelson Mandela as the iconic figure remains under medical supervision on Thursday. Mandela was hospitalized on June 8 after he was rushed in emergency. He is suffering with a serious lung disease while doctors have confirmed significant improvements in his health.

Zindzi Mandela proudly received her father’s new smart ID card from Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor at a celebratory event in Pretoria. Former President Thabo Mbeki, former Parliament Speaker Frene Ginwala, Andrew Mlangeni and Sophie de Bruyn also received their new IDs that can be used in the next elections. Zindzi said she was really happy that the former prime minister was one of the first Africans to get the new ID.

“I am going to give it to him and I am certain he would be very much happy,” she said.

He became the first black anti-apartheid President of South Africa in 1994. Nobel Prize winner Mandela has been suffering through lung problems ever since he was a political prisoner on Robben Island where he contracted tuberculosis. Mandela served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999 and is widely regarded as the father of the nation.
