Members of the ruling party, SPLM had earlier on accused Lam’s party the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM_DC) party of backing rebels fighting the country’s government. SPLM_DC hardly practices its political activities in the country in past months.

“Government has given us assurances that our party like other political parties in the country will be allowed or accorded freedom all over South Sudan,” Lam said while speaking during a training session organized by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Juba for his party members.

He gave a key note speech to the members explaining the role of the Opposition in the government.

“The Opposition is a necessary requirement of a democratic setup, scrutinizes government policies and proposes alternatives,” he told the members. “It also keeps the government on its toes … and also provides a government in waiting.”

Lam returned to the country early last month after spending nearly two years out of the country.

Lam’s party members claimed his life was at risk when he left the country in 2011.. His return came after the President Salva Kiir pardoned him to return home.
