State Police administrator Achuil Achuil told the press the violence broke out after a street boy was found dead opposite a restaurant in Wau’s main market last Friday.

The street urchins hurled stones at shops and people at the market as they engaged police in running battles.

A street child who requested anonymity told the press that they were demonstrating the death of their colleague, whom he alledged was killed by a trader at the market.

“We are demanding the truth about this death. Our colleague died in the hands of one of the businesspeople here”, he said.

Achuil said the arrested street children will be in police custody as investigations into the death continue.

He revealed that a suspect had been arrested, adding that preliminary investigations have shown no sign ofbodily harm, but internal bleeding.

Western Bahr el Ghazal State hosts hundreds of street children mainly from neighbouring Warrap, Lakes and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states. This has resulted into rising crime levels, including robberies at market centres.
