The Government of Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit yesterday met the Chair of the United Nations Higher Panel on South Sudan Referendum Benjamin Mkapa at his office in Juba.

Mkapa who is also a former President of Tanzania is on an official visit to the South Sudanese capital Juba.

The meeting discussed a number of issues regarding the upcoming referendum, the Abyei issue, border demarcation and the voter registration process.

Briefing the press after the meeting, Mkapa said he was very happy to discuss many positive issues with President Kiir which he described as “fruitful and positive”.

“We have discussed many issues, but centered on the upcoming referendum. I am very much impressed with the way the people of South Sudan are turning up in big numbers to register and that is a good signal to the success of the process”, said Mkapa.

He added that he had also held successful meetings in Khartoum with authorities and all the referendum stakeholders.

Also at the Juba meeting alongside President Kiir was the Minister in the Office of the President Dr Cirino Hiteng Ofuho.
