SSuNDE Calls For Extension Of Mandate For Sitting Government

The South Sudanese Network for Democracy and Elections-SSuNDE is calling on the people and the government of the Republic of South Sudan to remain committed in the pursuit of just and lasting peace and allow for a free and fair elections in the country, whose outcome will reflect the will of the electorates and serve as a unifying factor for the people. 

Mr. Ijjo Elias Odego, SSuNDE Executive Director in a statement on Friday said the organization is urging the National Legislative Assembly-NLA to use the remaining six months of the transitional period productively by working hand in hand with the civil society organizations, political parties and the National Constitution Review Commission to amend the Transitional Constitution 2011 to extend the mandate of the sitting government to continue to negotiate and bring peace to the people of South Sudan. 

The South Sudan transitional Constitution stipulates that South Sudan must hold general elections in July 2015. It also calls for a census to be held before the elections.

SSuNDE’s Executive Director Odego, says “SSuNDE is willing to collaborate with NEC in promoting genuine democratic elections in South Sudan when the country is stable and able to create an enabling environment for effective citizen participation in the electoral process” 

“At this difficult situation for our country, SSuNDE calls on all South Sudanese citizens, institutions and partners to support the peace process and return the country to normalcy” he continued. 

He said SSuNDE reiterates its commitment and full support for the IGAD led peace process through its current mediations efforts in finding sustainable peace, in which the people of South Sudan can have the opportunity to express their views in a free, fair and secure elections atmosphere within the framework of a political agreement. 

SSuNDE is a coalition of over 75 non-partisan civil society organizations formed on April 19, 2009. 

SSuNDE is the largest and most vibrant civil society network with presence in all the ten states of the Republic of South Sudan.
