The warring SPLM factions, the SPLM in government, the SPLM in opposition and the SPLM former detainees have finally reached a successful conclusion of the intra–SPLM Dialogue attended by delegations of the three SPLM Groups after intense negotiations which has been taking place in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army, Juba Delegation headed by President Kiir Today Thursday returned from Arusha after reaching an agreement on the re-unification of the SPLM.

The parties agreed upon most of the contentious issues including political, organizational and leadership issues.

Speaking to the press in Juba today on arrival from Arusha, the spokesperson of the SPLM Political Bureau Akol Paul Kordit confirmed the agreement reached.

“It is therefore our pleasure as the party delegation to the peace talks to inform you that yesterday 21st of January 2015, the three groups of the SPLM have reached an agreement on the reunification of the SPLM as one party once again” said Akol.

“This agreement of reunification of the SPLM has got a number of objectives; the main objective is to re-unify all the groups of the SPLM to one movement and immediately undertake reforms in the party that will lead into reforms in the Country” Akol added.

Akol further said that while in Arusha the three groups met alone without a facilitator to discuss and come up with solutions to the problem.

“In Arusha, we were sitting alone, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), the facilitator which is the ruling party inTanzania gave us an opportunity to discus and come up with solutions to our problems. It is our hope and prayer as SPLM delegation that the spirit of Arusha shall engulf the Addis Ababa Peace Talks”

“It is worth mentioning that this is not a final peace agreement; but this is an agreement meant to address the root causes of the conflict which started in the SPLM.”

Akol said that reaching an agreement to most of the contentious issues will not only make the Addis Ababapeace talks easier but also faster.

Daniel Awet Akot, the Chairman of the SPLM Delegation to the Arusha talks on his part said, “we went with an open mind with clean and cool hearts that we come to Arusha not to debate but to dialogue and dialogue must be inform of comradeship, there was no SPLM In Opposition, or  SPLM in Opposition. We abolished this and said let us talk face to face and honestly, that was the spirit of Arusha.”

The three SPLM factions agreed on political issues among others, to implement and comply with the provisions of the cessation of hostilities agreement and use this intra-SPLM party dialogue in Arusha and the IGAD mediation process in Addis Ababa to expedite the conclusion of the peace agreement in order to end the war.

On leadership issues they agreed that the term limit for the SPLM national and state chairpersons of the party shall be 2 terms of 5 years each only.
