Five journalists state-run media in Western Bahr el Gahzal state were killed by unknown gun persons on their way to Raja County dated 25th January, 2015

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization condemned the killing of the journalists and this is sad moment for the family of journalists in South Sudan and Western Bahr el Gahzal state in particular. The month of January, 2015 is the dark month in the history of South Sudan Journalists and media. Taking away the lives of persons by any means it counts as human rights atrocities. 

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said as long as peace process in Addis Ababa take on dragging for long period we will keep on losing the lives of our innocent citizens such as these journalists and the others with them. Our warring parties’ leadership should value the lives of our citizens by speeding up the negotiations for peace deal.  

The month of January, 2015 have register worse the history of beginning of the year for media and journalists. Since the independence of South Sudan the month of January 2015 is the dark month for journalists and media. Said Mr. Yakani

CEPO have registered six cases of journalist’s arbitrary torture and detention. The incident of killing five journalists in Western Bahr el Ghazal is worse. CEPO is calling upon the state authorities to provide protection and safety for journalists and respect the freedom of expression
