The conference main purpose is to enable the people discuss root causes of conflicts that have led to killings of innocent lives. It targets mostly the youth among others women, elders, traditional leaders, Boma Chiefs and Payam Chiefs.

The Organizing Secretary General, Jordan Anguramoi Ohia said that the 73,000 south Sudanese pounds peace project funded by the South Sudan Peace Commission brings together Bomas from, Haforere, Tiriangore, Mura-hatiha, Challamimi, Ilieu, Tuhubak, Iloli, Oguruny, Olianga and the host Hiyala.

The Conference Organizing Committee’s Chairperson, Mr. Alfred Ojura said that the conference seeks to address recurring conflicts manifested through continuous killings among youth and revenge killings of village against another.

The Conference Organizing Committee’s Deputy Chair Mr. Mario Grant Lochum said the committee will help facilitate dialogues between the different villages.

“This time, after a long analysis of many researches we carried out, we have realized and concluded that time has come for the government to only give them a chance to decide on what to do now that many lives have lost. What could be done? We are asking them to provide answers to their prolonged problems or misunderstandings. Let them tell us how best they could end the continuing arm conflicts. Ours is only to support facilitation through constructive dialogue. We would feel that is the only option we can offer for now.”

“We are going to respect their diverse views that what we are after, and nothing more than that. We are only creating a room for dialogue. Inclusive talks, we want them to freely express opinions and views and eventually come out clearly on what they want as a way forward.”

Speaking also at the conference’s venue, the Torit County Commissioner Hon. German Charles Ojok strongly appealed to the people of Hiyala Payam to show commitment by welcoming the peace and reconciliation.

Also, addressing the participants, the area Member of Parliament Hon. Josephine Thomas Ohia, emphasized that a need for all the Hiyala villages who have for years been fighting, raiding and killing themselves to re-double efforts on why they as one tribe of Otuho continue engaging in unnecessary practices. 

She stressed that the government has been unhappy with the community of Otuho seen fighting itself.

The MP called for individual commitment in order for them to make, promote and sustain peace. 

The 4-Day conference is under the theme, ‘Peace is forgiveness, love and reconciliation… Let peace be felt in our hearts as one people of one community. Stop killing one another enough is enough.’

The conference, which began on Sunday 25, is expected to end on Wednesday 28 January.
