IGAD Holds a Meeting on South Sudan

The IGAD Mini summit on South Sudan will be held tomorrow in Addis Ababa. The meeting will be attended by the leaders of South Sudan warring parties.  This is the 29th Extraordinary Summit of the IGAD Heads of State and Government to be focusing on South Sudan agenda.  CEPO welcome the summit and hope that the summit will come out with good results that will be centered on attainment of peace in speedy manner.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said that the citizens are demanding permanent ceasefire and quick achievement of peace. Continuous violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement by both warring parties is making the citizens doubt whether attainment of permanent ceasefire and peace will be faster. The agenda of the war it seems to be highly considered by the warring parties.

Among the key expectations of the citizens towards the IGAD summit was IGAD coming out with final decision on the final option for attainment of peace in South Sudan if still the warring parties are dragging in resolving their political difference. CEPO is sure that good number of the citizens is expecting IGAD to make a call for the public release of the African Union Commission of Inquiry. Said Mr. Yakani.

In strong terms CEPO is urging IGAD not repeat the mistake of giving deadline without attached sanctions since in the past three given deadlines did not materialized with effective results. The IGAD summit should make strong decision on the implementation of the Intra-SPLM Arusha Agreement. The probability of the Arusha Intra-SPLM agreement will not be honor and implemented timely by the signatories to it is very high following the statements issued by some members of the warring parties after signing of the agreement immediately.
