In a heated motion that took place in the assembly hall on Monday, the legislators challenged the legibility of the Caretaker Governor whom they have accused of 9 charges including embezzlement, fraud and unconstitutional steps taken by the Governor since he took over the position.

Wek Kuch Deng has condemned the impeachment and says that it was not procedural.

“The position of the honorable Council of Ministers in its extra ordinary meeting held today the 27th of January following the attempted impeachment of the Caretaker Governor of NBGS hereby condemns the unconstitutional decision made by state legislative assembly. According to the legislative assembly’s conduct of business 2012 article 41 and state transitional constitution 2011 article 101 respectively and therefore dismisses the decision as ‘unfounded.” Said Kuch Deng.

He urged all government institutions to continue operating normally.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Daniel Akol Diing has also condemned the process of the impeachment saying the legislators had no legal grounds to falsely accuse the Caretaker Governor.

“On legal grounds and in reference to our constitutions both national and in the state, there are reasons why we say the decision of the attempted impeachment was illegal and unconstitutional.” He explains

“As required by the provisional state constitution article 101 that if there is at all a motion for the impeachment of the Governor of the state, that motion shall be moved by one of the honorable members, seconded and supporting signatories should sign about 17 members, and table the same motion in the office of the assembly’s clerk who shall later on table the same motion in the speaker’s office and who shall finally form a committee to investigate the charges for a period of one week which may dismiss the charges or recommend for the tabling in the honorable house to discuss but not raising a motion within the same day and endorsing it the same day. Where is this law written that acts in such a rush without legal reference?”

Daniel Akol claims that the move was politically motivated by people he called the enemies of peace inNorthern Bahr el Gazal for their political interests. He strongly refuted the charges that were labeled against the Caretaker Governor.

“For instance, the assembly is talking about 3 million USD that has been allegedly awarded to the son of the Governor; this is a white lie because the records at the national ministry of commerce and Central Bank of South Sudan are available because in this particular case, we awarded about 21 companies with letters of credits {LCs} to go and buy food stuff in Uganda, Sudan and Kenya in order rescue the starving population of the state, this is where the 3million has gone.” He explains.

He said that legal steps will be taken against the 19 signatories to the attempted impeachment in a court of law.
